Have you seen or heard of WIGS?
If not then shame on you because it’s a fantastic web channel producing brilliant films with extraordinary talent. Here’s the blurb:
WIGS, the #1 channel for scripted drama on YouTube, brings you high-end, original series, short films, and documentaries, all starring female leads.
There are many reasons why WIGS needed to happen: one being to promote women of all ages in lead roles and another to give them a chance to lead in stories that were honest, funny and a little unconventional.
It’s a testament to its quality just how popular they have become. Well into its second year we are now seeing the WIGS world interweave; the whole project is empowering. There’s just one thing that irks me:
Aside from one short film called Jennifer, starring Mykelti Williamson, the show has no starring leads who are Black or Asian.
In fact the majority of lead women in the series (I counted 11) are blond. Isn’t that odd? There are probably more darker haired people in that production team, outside of that production studio, in those Writers and Directors lives? Maybe not all of colour but that brings me to another issue…
