I don’t know what to say. Its got Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens, which the hyper critical person inside of me warns me vehemently, to avoid this film at all costs – but it also stars Ashley Benson and James Franco who are in my book an enjoyable to watch , respectively.
According to wiki
Faith (Selena Gomez), Candy (Vanessa Hudgens), Brit (Ashley Benson), and Cotty (Rachel Korine) are best friends since grade school. They live together in a college dorm and want to go on an adventure. For spring break, they want to hit Florida to celebrate their vacation, so they decide to rob a restaurant to finance their trip. While in Florida, they get busted at a party for drugs, and land in jail. Alien (James Franco), a drug and arms dealer, bails them out to do some dirty work.
It sounds ridiculous, only because of the talent involved, but you know barring Rachel Korine, who I have yet to see act, the others are good. Maybe they’ll just pull it off Thirteen style ( in which Vanessa Hudgens had a tertiary role). The posters and promo stills do nothing to convince me that this is no more than a wet dream for boys with an underlying attempt at irony, trying not to try so hard by just making it as trashy as possible. Sexploitation is a word that is currently being attached to this project because Sisterhood of Travelling Pants this most certainly is not.
Directed by Harmony Korine (writer of KIDS 1995) the film has unsurprisingly got an R-rated label attached to it, what is surprising though is the directors choice of leads. Three very well-known young women synonymous for their rise to fame as pre-teen and teen role models were chosen over the usual virtual unknowns Korine likes to put into his films; even actresses associated with the indie film world: Elizabeth Olsen, Alice Englehart, Mia Wasikowska, Emily Browning, Saoirse Ronan, Elle Fanning to name but a few would have seemed more apt. Perhaps though that is the point? lets see how these princesses fall from grace just like their characters do – all the more shocking, hedonistic and debauched. Real teen rebellion, no doubt these girls are itching to side step from. Unfortunately for Gomez, she’s still so cute even when she’s trying to look bad.
On the basis that James Franco is on a path to out play Johnny Depp and Gary Oldman in the crazy myriad of roles one can ever take on stakes, the fact that KIDS when I first saw it, scared the s*** out of me and even more out of my parents and also because I love the posters and I have a big sister soft spot for Benson and Gomez – I will watch this.
